Union Leaders

Below is a summary of the discussion held by WSU union leaders on one of the five strategic directions contained in the current strategic action plan. The group focused on the third strategic direction on improving the quality of campus life.

3. Quality of campus life: Enhance the quality of life on campus by nurturing a culture of success and excellence.

Union leaders offered the following suggestion for revising this objective:

  • Develop more facilities for students’ recreational and social activities, including a new and improved student center.
  • Provide childcare for employees and students.
  • Limit the amount of eating currently done in the undergraduate library and enforce rules regarding student behavior.
  • Enlist the help of student volunteers in helping new students find classrooms and buildings in the first few weeks of school; improve signage in buildings.
  • Upgrade internal communications with employees to guarantee that staff is kept in the loop regarding campus activities and programs.
  • Provide reduced or sliding-fee scale for parking.
  • Recognize that all employees do not communicate through e-mail.
  • Improve quality of student services by ensuring worker training, upward mobility and competitive pay and benefits.
  • Train supervisors, chairs and directors in contract administration and supervisory training.
  • Recognize the need for retiree health care benefits.
  • Create a system where employees have an opportunity to review and appraise the performance of supervisors and managers.
  • Once employees are eligible, actively encourage participation in WSU’s retirement program enabling them to receive university matching contributions.
  • Provide pre-retirement planning programs for employees and their spouses.
  • Offer positive feedback to the university workforce for a job well done.
