Student Summary
December 6, 2005
Here is the summary of the discussion held by Wayne State undergraduate students on December 6, 2005 who examined two of the five strategic directions contained in the current plan. Students focused on the learning experience and the quality of campus life.
1. Learning Experience: Establish and sustain a superlative learning experience that builds upon the unique values and attributes of WSU.
- Increase faculty use of Blackboard system.
- Examine the possibility of using a quarter system instead of a semester system.
- Rising concerns about use of teaching assistants as substitutes for professors.
- Do not require proficiency exams from transfer students or those who are doing well in the subject area.
- Offer more classes online and on Friday and Saturday.
- Make changes to the physical layout of Financial Aid so that students can have private discussions.
- Continue to beautify campus with more art and landscaping.
- Reduce the noise and socializing in the undergraduate library.
- Construct student union or new student center for social programs and activities.
2. Quality of Campus Life: Enhance the quality of life on campus by nurturing a culture of success and excellence.
- Provide more opportunities for daycare and charge reduced amounts for daycare as do other colleges.
- Make additional information available on student activities, retail, services and study groups.
- Expand the availability of core courses.
- Address the issue of vandalism in the residence halls, the need for additional security cameras on campus and more visible and active public safety cadets.
- Develop an escort program where student volunteers would walk students to dorms or parking structures to promote a greater sense of security.
- Target one school or college for national prominence to provide greater name recognition for WSU.
- Construct connecting tunnels between campus buildings.
- Ensure that restaurants and other services are available on evenings and weekends.
- Provide healthy eating alternatives to traditional fast-food outlets.
- Promote additional student organizations.
- Create more opportunities for alumni to interact with students to provide mentoring and career guidance.
- Increase the number of student internships.
