Graduate Student Summary

Below is a summary of the discussion held by graduate and professional students on November 17, 2005 who focused on two of the five strategic directions contained in the current plan. The group looked at ways to upgrade the plan as it relates to the learning experience and improving the quality of campus life.

1. Learning Experience: Establish and sustain a superlative learning experience that builds upon the unique values and attributes of WSU.

  • Increase awareness of job opportunities as well as academic support services by holding a mid-year job fair.
  • Improve and renovate football stadium and Matthaei Athletic Complex.
  • Create 24-hour study space and retail and food services.
  • Make available a 24-hour parking structure.
  • Increase access to food services on weekends.
  • Renovate the Student Center.
  • Increase the awareness and hours of the campus shuttle service, especially from the School of Medicine to campus.
  • Increase opportunities for communication between undergraduate and graduate students, specifically between medical school students and pre-med students.
  • Create more housing for graduate students near the main campus and the School of Medicine.
  • Do a better job of promoting programs, activities and services available to students.

3. Quality of campus life: Enhance the quality of life on campus by nurturing a culture of success and excellence.

  • Increase mentoring programs for graduate students.
  • Clarify the role of the Graduate School with regard to graduate students.
  • Create more opportunities for students to participate and present in academic conferences.
  • Avoid last minute tuition increases that create a burden on medical students who have already obtained loans and grants based on published tuition rates.
